Medical bill advocates are not just for the poor and uninsured. As a matter of fact, if you have means and/or insurance you might be more susceptible to incorrect medical bills.
If you want to know how out of control the healthcare system is in this regard try asking your doctor what a procedure will cost. S/he will not be able to answer.
Maybe it’s not their job, but isn’t it someone’s? A good example of the insanity around medical bills can be seen in a California study on appendectomies.
This study was published by the Archives of Internal Medicine. 19,368 California 2009 appendectomy cases were reviewed.
They looked for simple, similar cases. For example, no hospital stay exceeded four days. Similar medications and tests. The patients were all between 18 and 59 years old. The cost for the procedure ranged from $1,500 to a mind boggling $180,000! The average was $33,000.
Further findings revealed that there were several cases of the procedure costing less than $2k and several costing in the $100k ballpark.
When examiners reviewed the cases, they could find no explanation for a full third of them. Keep in mind that these were the raw bills prior to being submitted to insurance companies. Nor did the study find out what the patients actually paid.
This is more reason than ever to review your medical bills. It does not matter what socio-economic group you’re in. And do you think this is isolated to just appendectomies?
If this sounds alarmist, just try to do some comparison shopping for an appendectomy. You do it for cars, don’t you?
MBCR analyzes your medical bill or claim for errors by comparing them to your insurance plan, state and federal regulations or industry practices. MBCR can also help you if you are uninsured.
